Paying Attention to Camp Flyer Details [ep.03]

LISTEN BELOW

Heyyy, welcome back to another episode of Let’s Talk Camp!

I’m Stacia, your host, and if you’re new here or missed my earlier episodes, be sure to check out Episode 1, where I share a little bit about who I am and why I started this camp journey. But today, we’ve made it to Episode 3, and we’re diving into something that’s been on my mind for a while now.

As a camp director, after investing in either outsourcing or spending hours designing a camp flyer (and trust me, it's no easy feat), it never fails—people still call or email to ask about information that’s already right there on the flyer.

Over the years, I’ve made adjustments to fonts, sizes, and layouts to make sure everything is legible. Yet, the questions still come pouring in. So today, I want to help you out by sharing the basic details to look for on any camp flyer and a few questions you should definitely follow up on after reviewing it.

What to Look for on a Camp Flyer

First things first—branding. Always check if the flyer includes a logo or some form of branding. If I see a flyer without a logo, I’m like, “Ummm… who am I supposed to trust with my money again?” That logo allows you to do some research—whether it’s an Instagram page, Facebook, YouTube channel, or website—look for credibility behind the camp.

Now, here are the key details you should pay attention to when reading your next camp flyer:

  1. Daily Hours – Does the flyer clearly state the start and end times of the camp day? It’s crucial to know when to drop off and pick up your child.

  2. Location – Where is the camp being held? Make sure it’s convenient or accessible for you.

  3. Calendar Dates – What are the exact dates of the camp? Mark them down!

  4. Registration and Camp Fees – Be vigilant about what’s included in the fees. Some registration fees may cover products or services, and others may be non-refundable, so check those details.

  5. Age Range – This one is super important. Does the flyer specify the age group for the camp? This helps you know if the camp is a good fit for your child.

  6. Listed Activities – Take a moment to browse through the activities. Is it an academic camp? Does it focus on math and language arts? Is it play-based or skill-oriented? Make sure the activities align with your child’s interests.

  7. Contact Information – This could be a phone number, email, website, or social media handles. Be sure the camp has multiple ways to get in touch with them.

Sometimes, I get that one or two of these details might be missing, but don’t just jump to conclusions—check the flyer carefully first before reaching out with your questions.

Questions to Ask After Reviewing the Flyer

Now, after you’ve thoroughly reviewed the flyer and you still have questions (which is totally fine!), here are some key questions you might want to ask:

  • What’s the earliest drop-off or latest pick-up time?

  • What’s the protocol if someone else has to pick up my camper?

  • How many years of experience do you have with children or running vacation camps?

  • Is there a discount for siblings?

  • Do you provide snacks/lunches for the campers?

  • What is your behavior management policy?

  • How do you handle emergencies and evacuations in case of natural disasters? (Yes, this is super important and a question I encourage parents to ask!)

Let’s Recap

In today’s episode, we covered the crucial details you should pay attention to on a camp flyer, from branding and credibility to the essential information like dates, hours, and fees. Remember, taking the time to review the flyer carefully and asking the right questions helps you make better decisions for your child’s camp experience.
